    Black bear baiting

What do you typically use at your bait stations? Here in south central Alaska dog food and used cooking grease is very common.

Don Knight - hunter's campfire expert on bear hunting - says he uses edible garbage discarded from restaurants. See his article on black bear hunting, which you can link to from the home page of hunterscampfire.com. I also have seen guys use fresh meat scraps (raw)  which bears love. Bear expert Dr. Ken Nordberg recommends these two things as well as dry dog food, or any combination of the stuff above. He also recommends watermelon, or any very ripe fruit, as the scent is also a great attraction. And finally, I know another old timer who has had measurable success with good ole grocery store honey buns. Our state does not presently allow baiting, so we only experiment with this when we are able to hunt in the northern midwestern states where baiting is legal. Let me know if this helps with your questions. Happy hunting!

    Re: Black bear baiting

to tell you the truth . theirs not not much that want work on  black bears .when you or baiting.. but that said ..if you have been baiting much at all . you will have all ready noticed .that some bear's  just like  different things.////so what is a sure fire killer at one stand.. may only be so so at the next..some times it's best to offer 4 or more different  things at the baiting  stand.then just key into what that bear seem's to want at that time  at that  place..one more thing you may want to add to your set up.would be marking  trees. yea thats right..if your like me i really like to watch them .and only go for a bigger bear now days.. so to help you  tell which one of your stands has a big bear comeing in.what i have done  in years past was  take pennut butter  or lard  and rub this on a couple tree's at the baiting place.. normally.i would end up with  teeth marks in the  -lard or pennut butter .as most bears  sooner or later will bite into  it. now if your looking for a big bear .one thing for sure he will have a large mouth.so all you have to do is .look at his 2 large canine teeth.they will stand out. rule i go buy is ---if it is around 1 3/4 inch between  these 2 teeth you or looking at a normal male or female bear .which can be any where from 150 lb  up to 275 lb.. but if the canine's or 2 inch to 2 3/8 you or on to a really big bear ..and if you ever find one 2- 1/2 ''or larger..???? well all i can say is your on to one ever bit as big as the grizzly.... hope this helps you  ..donnie knight
